Interval mnemonics anchor each interval to the opening of a famous song: the start of Here Comes the Bride is a rising perfect 4th, Hey Jude falls a minor 3rd.
The trick works because you already store those melodies with perfect accuracy. Borrow the song’s first leap and you have the interval, in tune, on demand.
Direction matters: an ascending anchor does not help you name a falling interval. The table below is the trainer’s own two-way library; in the exercises the hints play these songs on demand, and you can paint your own custom melody in the app.
| Interval | Ascending song | Descending song |
|---|---|---|
| Minor 2nd | Jaws, Für Elise | Für Elise, Joy to the World |
| Major 2nd | Baby Shark, Happy Birthday | Mary Had a Little Lamb, Yesterday, Three Blind Mice |
| Minor 3rd | Smoke on the Water, Rolling in the Deep, Mad World | Hey Jude, Frosty the Snowman, The Star-Spangled Banner |
| Major 3rd | When the Saints, Sir Duke | Beethoven's 5th, Swing Low, Sweet Chariot |
| Perfect 4th | Here Comes the Bride, Harry Potter | Eine kleine Nachtmusik, O Come All Ye Faithful |
| Tritone | text hint | Black Sabbath |
| Perfect 5th | Star Wars, Twinkle Twinkle | The Flintstones, Minuet in G (A Lover's Concerto) |
| Minor 6th | The Entertainer, Slow Dancing in a Burning Room | Where Do I Begin (Love Story) |
| Major 6th | My Bonnie, Jingle Bells | The Music of the Night, Nobody Knows the Trouble |
| Minor 7th | Can't Stop, The Winner Takes It All | Watermelon Man |
| Major 7th | Take On Me | I Love You (Cole Porter), Baba Yaga (Mussorgsky) |
| Octave | Over the Rainbow | Willow Weep for Me, Mozart Symphony No. 29 |
Common questions
What song is a perfect 4th?
Here Comes the Bride (the Bridal Chorus) opens with an ascending perfect 4th. Amazing Grace is another common anchor.
What song is a descending minor 3rd?
Hey Jude: the fall from "Hey" to "Jude" is a descending minor 3rd.
Do song mnemonics slow you down eventually?
They are scaffolding. With practice the recognition becomes direct and the song drops away; use anchors to start, then let speed pressure retire them.
